Apple makes its first investment in a wind power project in China.

On December 9, Xinhua News Agency reported from Beijing (Reporter Han Qiao, Quan Xiaoshu) that Apple Inc. recently announced a partnership with Xinjiang Goldwind Science & Technology Co., Ltd. to invest in wind power projects in four provinces in China. This will add 285 megawatts of clean energy to the Chinese power grid.
Lisa Jackson, Apple's Vice President of Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives, stated that this is Apple's first investment in the wind power sector and also its largest clean energy investment globally.
According to a previous announcement from Goldwind, its wholly-owned subsidiary Beijing Tianrun plans to transfer 30% equity of four subsidiary project companies in Henan, Shandong, Shanxi, and Yunnan provinces to Apple.
Lisa said, "We are very concerned about the issue of overcapacity in the wind power industry, and the four projects we selected are all in areas without wind power curtailment issues."
Apple's move aims to increase the clean energy usage rate of its upstream manufacturers. Upstream manufacturers refer to raw material companies whose products are used in Apple products through major suppliers like the well-known Foxconn.
Lisa stated that the wind power project and the 170-megawatt solar project Apple launched in Inner Mongolia last year are both aimed at addressing the clean energy needs of upstream manufacturers. "These projects will generate over 900 million kilowatt-hours of electricity, equivalent to the energy needs of 690,000 Chinese households for a year."
Lisa introduced that this clean energy will be integrated into the power grid, and upstream manufacturers can choose to purchase clean energy if they wish. "At the same time, Apple is very pleased to see that our major suppliers, including Foxconn, Lens Technology, Catcher Technology, and Solvay, have committed to using renewable energy to power the production of Apple-related products."
"We must help our manufacturing partners become greener, but teaching a man to fish is better than giving him a fish; we are continuously working in this direction," Lisa said.
